Summer Pleasures

Dressé sur trois pitons rocheux surplombant la Semois, 
le château fort de Bouillon, avec le dédale de ses couloirs et ses immenses salles voûtées, est considéré comme le plus ancien et le plus intéressant vestige de la féodalité en Belgique.


Les origines des premières fortifications remonteraient au VIIIe siècle. 


Il fut immortalisé par Godefroid, chef de la première croisade (1096) et avoué du Saint Sépulcre qui engagea le château auprès de l'archevêché de Liège pour financer son expédition en Terre Sainte.


Enfin, il connaîtra, sous les guerres de Louis XIV, de grands travaux d'aménagements réalisés par Vauban et sera occupé militairement jusqu'en 1830.

Bouillon

The town of Bouillon is famous throughout the world for its history, its castle and Godfroid de Bouillon who went on the Crusades. To-day you can visit the fortified Castle. There you will find the oldest and most interesting remains of feudalism in Belgium, its present aspect being mainly due to work carried out between the 16th century and the Dutch period. The building is Listed as major Wallon heritage. 

On the way up from the road by the Austrian Tour (1551) you get a wonderful view of the whole fortification and of the town and the meanders of the river Semois. Included in the price of the visit: Educational exhibition about birds of prey all year round and shows from March 1st to November 11th inclusive; plus every weekend of the year and public holidays and during the Christmas and Carnival holidays (at 11.30, 14.00, 15.30) and at 17.00 on weekends and public holidays from 01/04 until 30/09, as well as every day in July and August. Also included since 2009 : exhibition ‘Scriptura,which tells the history of writing, from the Middle Ages until the twentieth century,i.e. from the quill pen to the PC.
